Self-taught.<br \/>\nAfter 3 years working at a company in Tokyo, I traveled solo around the world for about a year and a half.<br \/>\nThe experiences of that journey became a turning point.<br \/>\nUpon returning, I spent approximately 4 years in art practice in Tokyo.<br \/>\nSince the summer of 2024, I have been based in The Hague, Netherlands.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-1911-0-0-1\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor\" data-index=\"1\" ><div style=\"text-align: left;\" data-title-color=\"#443f3f\" data-headings-color=\"#443f3f\" class=\"panel-widget-style panel-widget-style-for-1911-0-0-1\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Artist_Statement\"><\/span>Artist Statement<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal leading-[1.7]\">Wood grain is a physical record of cosmic rhythm. Time, weather, gravity, seasons, the rotation of the earth \u2014 these are the forces that have slowly inscribed themselves into matter. To follow that grain with a brush is to integrate the <em>self<\/em> into the <em>whole<\/em> \u2014 something far older and larger than the individual. This is both act and expression. I call this practice <a href=\"https:\/\/kota-yoshida.com\/en\/cosmic-rhythm-series\/\">Cosmic Rhythm.<br \/>\n<\/a>In recent years, I have been working with <a href=\"https:\/\/kota-yoshida.com\/en\/artist-statement-a\/\">reclaimed wood<\/a> collected from the streets of the Netherlands. Each piece carries its own form, its cracks, its scars \u2014 quiet evidence of an unknown life lived nearby. I wash it, and bring it back as art \u2014 and in doing so, I believe this material carries the meanings of environment, cycles, and transformation quietly within it.<br \/>\nBy weaving into the work elements of ukiyo-e and iwa-enogu mineral pigments, I am confronting an identity that living abroad has made newly visible to me.<br \/>\nAt the foundation of this practice is the Law of Dependent Origination, as taught by Shakyamuni \u2014 the understanding that all things exist through mutual relationship. It connects also to wabi-sabi, ichigo-ichie, and Ko-Shinto \u2014 the aesthetics and spirit that run deep in Japanese culture.<br \/>\nNature and humanity. Past and future. The individual and the whole.
