Wood grain is a trace inscribed over long years by natural forces: weather, gravity, the seasons, the earth's rotation, sunlight. I see it as a physical record of cosmic rhythm. And so I think of this practice as an act of integrating the individual self into a whole far older and larger than I am. In the dark, the work glows quietly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">As the support that carries this record, I work primarily with <a href=\"https:\/\/kota-yoshida.com\/en\/artist-statement-a\/\">reclaimed wood<\/a> gathered from the streets. I wash what has been discarded and bring it back to life as art. Each piece has a form like no other, its cracks, its scars \u2014 quiet traces of an unknown life that once touched it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">This practice resonates with the Law of Dependent Origination, as taught by Shakyamuni \u2014 the understanding that all things exist through mutual dependence. It connects, too, with wabi-sabi, ichigo-ichie, and Ko-Shinto \u2014 things alive within me that I rediscovered as I left my homeland, traveled the world, and made a life abroad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-claude-response-body break-words whitespace-normal\">Nature and humanity.
