An Artist&#8217;s Reflection<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\"Art seems kind of expensive.\"<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Many people might think so.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Indeed, in reality, most art is not cheap.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">If you have ever visited an art gallery or gallery space,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">you may have a sense of the price range.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">On media such as TV, they tend to focus on the exceptionally high-priced works,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">and in fact, it\u2019s always about stories like \"Wow, that's amazing!\"<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">For example,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">back in 1987,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">a painting of sunflowers by the master Van Gogh was auctioned at Christie's in London.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">It was purchased for around 5.8 billion yen by the predecessor of SOMPO Holdings,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Yasuda Fire &amp; Marine Insurance.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Also, more recently,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">at an auction in New York, a painting by street artist Basquiat<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">was sold for an astonishing 12.3 billion yen.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">It was bought by the former CEO of ZOZOTOWN, Mr. Maezawa.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">That amount of money could buy a house,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">or even more than that!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">...Also, the fact that both buyers were Japanese makes me happy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">(Inner voice)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">However, if you put it bluntly,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">it\u2019s just \"a painting.\"<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">To put it harshly,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">it's just something with color on a canvas.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">However, it\u2019s also \"much more than a painting.\"<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Looking at the numbers,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><strong>humanity seems to place an incredibly high value on art.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">So why is art so expensive?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">As an artist,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">I\u2019d like to offer my own reflection.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-10222-0-0-1\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-image\" data-index=\"1\" ><div style=\"text-align: left;\" id=\"The_Value_of_Art_Rarity\"><\/span>The Value of Art = Rarity<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">As mentioned earlier,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">it\u2019s a fact that there are many works of art that are not cheap in the world.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Why is that?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">There are many complex factors involved,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">but if I were to sum it up in one word,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><strong>it\u2019s \"rarity.\"<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">For a painting,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><strong>the painting itself<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><strong>is the only one of its kind in the world.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Even if the same artist painted the same picture twice,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">while the two may look similar,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">they are still two different paintings.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">This uniqueness adds significant value.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">For example,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">the master Vincent van Gogh.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">It\u2019s a well-known story, but during his lifetime,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">he was not appreciated and his works sold very little.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">However, after his death,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">his works started to gain recognition.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">(Maybe the times caught up to him, or maybe his marketing was just brilliant?)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">And ironically, after his death,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">the value of his works kept increasing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">By then, of course, the artist<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Van Gogh was no longer around,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">so no new works would ever be created.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">In other words,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">the works of Van Gogh, which were highly valued,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">are all one-of-a-kind in the world.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Van Gogh is long gone,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">so no new works will ever be made.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">(Only the existing works remain.)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">These are just some of the <strong>multiple factors<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><strong>that contribute to the \"rarity\"<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\"><strong>and significantly increase the value and price of the artwork.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Of course, with modern technology,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">it is possible to create nearly perfect reproductions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">However,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">they are just copies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">The real painting of Van Gogh's<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">\"The Night Caf\u00e9\" is the only one in the world.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-10222-0-0-3\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-image\" data-index=\"3\" ><div style=\"text-align: left;\" class=\"p3\">art can also be considered as a \"culture\" that symbolizes its time.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">In ancient times, there was an era when religious paintings depicting the image of God became popular in churches,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">so that even those who could not read could feel the greatness of God.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">There was also a time when it was fashionable for nobles to commission portraits of themselves from artists,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">in order to preserve their likeness or to display them in their homes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">However, when the camera (photography) was invented, allowing people to preserve their likenesses quickly and cheaply,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">the demand for portrait artists dramatically declined.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Then, artists began to question what exactly a painting is,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">and what only painting could do,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">leading to the rise of movements like Impressionism, which included Van Gogh.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">As you can see,<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">art and paintings are also representations of their time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">I won\u2019t dive too deep into it here, as it could get lengthy, but<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">this function of symbolizing \"culture\" is also an important factor in raising the value of art.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-10222-0-0-5\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-image\" data-index=\"5\" ><div style=\"text-align: left;\"
