This is a two-piece work that becomes one. The paintings were developed by following the unique forms and natural grain of the wood. This project is an experimental endeavor within Kota’s original "Cosmic Rhythm" style—where he follows the wood's natural patterns—by integrating a different material (canvas) and focusing specifically on the motif of the "eye."
When these two pieces are brought together, they embody the expression of Yin and Yang. Originating in ancient Chinese philosophy, Yin and Yang describes how two opposing yet interdependent forces of Ki (life energy) form the foundation of all things in existence. It is a grand theory that explains the origins of the cosmos and the inner workings of all phenomena. In this work, EYE (←) represents Yin, and EYE (→) represents Yang.
The philosopher Plato (427–347 BC) famously said, "The eyes are the windows of the soul." Similarly, a Japanese proverb states, "The eye is the mirror of the soul." Even today, many people resonate with these ideas. It suggests that since antiquity, it has been a universal human understanding that the eyes express things that cannot be seen directly, such as emotions and the spirit.
Furthermore, whether by coincidence or destiny, the pronunciation of the word "eye" (/άɪ/) is almost identical to the Japanese word for "Love" (Ai). This work suggests that, like our emotions and spirit, love is also vividly expressed through our eyes.
