The Review
At Tsukiji Honganji,
I came across Kota's solo exhibition,
which led me to ask him to create a painting for me.
Earlier this year in February, my daughter passed away,
and I had come to Tsukiji Honganji intending to do
sutra copying in her memory. However, due to my mistake,
I couldn't proceed with it, and instead, I encountered Kota.
As I was admiring the artworks,
Kota approached me and explained his work.
His paintings conveyed something profound—
a sense of being both deeply moving and soothing.
I was drawn in, wanting to keep looking at them.
I had been thinking about commissioning a painting
of my late daughter and father for a long time.
Since I couldn't create it myself, I had been searching online
for someone who could paint portraits.
Although Kota's style was different from what
I had envisioned, while talking to him,
my thoughts drifted to my daughter.
I asked if he could create such a painting,
and after a moment of thought, he kindly said,
"Yes, I can do that."
There was something about Kota's
background and the impression he left on me
that made him feel less like a stranger.
I strongly felt that I wanted him to create this work,
so I made the request.
When I saw the finished painting,
I felt a warm and immense sense of comfort
that enveloped me completely.
It was so fulfilling that tears welled up in my eyes,
and I was overcome with gratitude.
The painting is very beautiful, with warm colors,
expressed in gentle hues that change depending on the angle from which it is viewed.
My family was amazed, saying it looks exactly like my grandfather,
“It's just him!!”
My daughter said it looks like when she was a little younger,
so it’s a bit different from her current image, but she still sees some resemblance.
At first, I imagined the sky, but
depending on the perspective, it can also look like the sea. A mysterious painting.
Since my daughter loves the sky and clouds, I had them draw two people in the sky,
hoping that her grandfather, who passed away, would guide her,
but Kota-san also added a dragon to the painting.
It is a deeply moving and cherished painting.
Since the painting came into our home, some old memories have resurfaced,
and they are from the difficult times of raising my children.
There were such intense emotional swings that I couldn’t contain them.
I felt like I was going to lose my mind at home, so I went outside, cried my heart out, and once I calmed down,
I returned home, but it was an emotional explosion that even surprised me.
But since then, nothing like that has happened,
though the sadness hasn't disappeared,
I live in peace.
I wonder what that was all about...
I didn’t know how artists create their work,
but despite my impolite request to have something drawn according to my image,
Kota listened carefully and truly captured my feelings to create it.
And Kota’s painting, along with the words written there,
evoked such an emotional response that it felt like my soul was shaking.
I’m truly grateful to have had Kota paint this for me.
As I wish for the happiness of my daughter and father,
the painting makes me feel that they are also wishing for our happiness,
and with this, I want to move forward.
