Cosmic Rhythm
Co-creation with the Cosmos
Introduction
My art concept is the philosophical idea of Oneness (all that exists in this cosmos is one), and my work is an attempt to give this concept visual expression. This expression is centered on my original painting technique, Cosmic Rhythm.
What is Cosmic Rhythm?
I regard the wood grain as the visualization of the rhythms of the cosmos. Respecting this, Cosmic Rhythm is a technique of painting directly onto wood along the flow of its grain.
Nature on Earth is a fragment of the cosmos, and its movements are entrusted to the order of the cosmos. I believe that the wood grain is a physical record of the cosmic order—incorporating the passage of time, weather, gravity, seasons, the Earth's rotation, and celestial movements. Aligning my brush with this flow is an act of transcending the individual self to synchronize with the great cosmic rhythm; I consider this a co-creation with the cosmos.
I aim for an expression in which nature and humanity, past and future, and the individual and the whole are in harmony. Through my work, I hope that viewers will feel the rhythm of the cosmos and gain new perspectives or insights.
This approach resonates with the Law of Engi (interdependent origination) taught by Shaka (c. 5th–6th century BCE), as well as the spirits of Japanese Wabi-Sabi, Ichi-go Ichi-e, and Ko-shinto.
In recent years, I have been working with reclaimed materials and incorporating Japanese elements.
